PEDAGOGY

I teach literature and literary theory through interdisciplinary methods that creatively engage and respond to our changing world. In my courses, the classroom extends out into the city, and literature and literary culture become ways to understand, to challenge, and to remake that world.

My areas of expertise and interest are Canadian literature and Indigenous literature as read through critical lenses of feminist theory, affect and phenomenology, decolonization, textualizing orality, media and archives, sound studies, and performance studies. Drawing upon my experience producing audio for The SpokenWeb Podcast and publishing on literary audio, my course designs increasingly integrate new modes of publishing, digital humanities, podcasting, and public humanities.

Highlights [above photo collage] from teaching as an LTA in Canadian Literature at Concordia University (2015-2018; 2022-2026): a guest reading by poet Erin Robinsong (Rag Cosmology) about poetry’s capacity to respond to climate change and to inhabit ecological thinking; a panel that I organized for my undergraduate students as a way to share the papers that they had produced for my upper-year seminar, Performing Literary Archives: ENGL 453 Advanced Studies in Canadian Writing; and a group photo with those same undergraduate students after they brilliantly presented their work at Concordia’s Off the Page Festival (March 17, 2018).

A highlight from teaching ENGL 244 Quebec/Montreal Writing in English (Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 at Concordia) was organizing an in-class reading by Kaie Kellough. The above photo shows Kellough reading from his experimental Montreal-based novel Accordéon, followed by a reading from Magnetic Equator. The reading was called “Sounding the City” and it was co-sponsored by Concordia’s Writers Read and SpokenWeb (April 12, 2019).
